Recently, there have been some horrifying incidents in B.C. that have raised serious concerns about our public safety system.
One tragic event involved two stranger attacks in Vancouver last week, leaving one person deceased and another severely injured. The individual who has been charged has had over 60 previous police interactions.
Just days later, RCMP Members in Nanaimo apprehended someone threatening residents with a machete while out on bail, there was a drive-by shooting in Coquitlam with suspects ‘known to police’, and in Kelowna, a woman was stabbed during a home invasion, leaving her with life-threatening injuries. These incidents have deeply affected us all and underscore the urgent need for more effective bail solutions.
British Columbians are worried about repeat offenders
It’s clear that our current ‘catch and release’ system isn’t working. A new August 2024 survey by Pollara Strategic Insights shows that 82% of British Columbians are worried about repeat offenders, and 86% believe it should be harder for them to be granted bail.
